Polly was an indentured servant ever since her parents died. She was forced to work, and her indenture was sold to a Mr. Percival Derby. He was rude, but made her do her work. He bought a slave named Myna, (Amari) they were housed together, and worked for a chef named Teenie. Teenie helped her get the hang of everything, and Polly was to teach Amari English, and she caught on really fast.
Polly was one of those girls who thought she was the toughest and baddest out there, but boy was she wrong. Polly could read and write, and cook, but not as well as Teenie. Polly and Amari soon became sort of friends, and did almost everything they could together. But one day when Mrs. Derby was going to have her child, everything changed.
The child was black, and they knew that they had to hide it from Mr. Derby, but they couldn't he found the child and killed Noah, the father and slave, soon after Noah, the baby. It didn't even have a name. Mr. Derby knew something was going on so he locked Teenie, Amari, Tidbit, and Polly in the meat freezer. Only then Cato, an old slave, told them about this place called Fort Mose, and they had the doctor to help with their escape.
Polly, Amari, Tidbit, and his dog hushpuppy, ventured through the woods sleeping through day, and running at night. Most people would run north, but Amari believed in Fort Mose and went south instead. They all fought hunger and exhaustion, but they kept on going and found their way.
Polly decided that she was going to find food, but instead found a boy instead. He fed them, and gave them a place to sleep. In the morning his dad found them and tried to claim the reward for them, but the boy took them instead. He helped them back into the forest instead.
They continued to run, and stumbled across Clay. He tried to take them back, but they got him knocked him out, and tied him to a tree. Clay wasn't seen after that ever again. The next person they stumbled across was a kind women who fed them, gave them new clothes, and gave them a horse and buggy.
They soon reached Fort Mose where they met a woman who took them to their new house, and lived the rest of their days as working men and women. Polly was glad by this, but many moons past and she grew depressed that the red haired boy never came back. She committed suicide by using one one on the knifes that the black smith gave her.
