Maddy Slade:
Copper Sun is about a girl named Amari. Amari goes through many obstacles like slave traders killing her parents and brother, and enslaving her and some other villagers one of which was her soon to be husband, Besa. Amari has to walk many miles chained to others, and only given tiny amounts of food, not even enough for a mouse to survive. Amari witnesses deaths along the way to where the slave traders are taking them.
The men and women are taken to a small town where the slaves are branded, splashed with cold and salty water, and shoved into a cell with many other frightened people, some of which don't even speak the same language. Amari soon meets a woman named Afi, who acts as Amari's new mother. Afi teaches Amari many things about how not to be chosen to be put on the ship, and how to get food.
Soon Amari, Afi, and many other slaves are put on a large ship that is heading to America. The men have to stay on the lower deck of the ship, but the women get to stay on the top deck, but sometimes that is not a good privilege. The sailors would choose a woman every night and take them to a room or a corner and do horrible things to the women. A red haired man befriends Amari, teaches her some English, and saves her from what the other men could be doing to her, but not always is he there for her.
A long time goes without even a glimpse of land until they finally reach America. Amari is sold into slavery and was bought by a man named Percival Derby. He also bought a girls indenture. Her name is Polly. Polly teaches Amari more English and they become sort of friends. Along with a nice woman names Teenie, and her son Tidbit with his dog hushpuppy. Clay is Amari's owner who calls her Myna and treats Amari like a common animal.
Polly, Amari, Tidbit, and Hushpuppy all escape one day with the help of a doctor. He tells them to go North, but they decide to go south to a place called Fort Mose. They make it in a few months, and live out the rest of their days as free citizens.
Polly is an indentured servant. Her parents were in debt, and died of disease, leaving Polly to face about fourteen years as a servant to anyone who would buy her indenture. She is sold to a Mr. Percival Derby who also buys a slave that at first Polly doesn't like, but soon she starts to teach the slave English, and finds that her real name is Amari. Polly also befriends a woman named Teenie, and her son Tidbit, and his dog Hushpuppy.
They all take care of each other until one day they have the help of a doctor to escape. Polly finds that Amari is way smarter than she thought, and that make it to where their headed. They live the rest of their days as citizens of Fort Mose, and Polly and Amari adopt Tidbit to be their son.
My opinion of Copper Sun is that it is a well thought out book with very good detailing. It was as if I was there watching the book unravel itself into a movie. I love the part where Hushpuppy ran away because of how the author led up to that point was very good and when you find that he was lost, you started asking yourself questions like, Is he ever going to come back, Is he dead, and how will Hushpuppy find his way back to Tidbit.
My least favorite part of the book was the ending, how it left you at the cliff hanger. I thought that was a good idea, but why end it there. What I learned from the book was that I didn't know that the slaves were branded and stuffed into cells with many other people. It just isn't right how people could just sit there and watch the beating and whipping and all other horrible things that were done to the slaves. I'm just glad that it's over in America, and hope it stops the rest of the way in Africa
Alice Ragan:
Copper Sun in a two perspective book. It is about an Amari, an African girl taken away from her homeland to be a slave, and Polly, a white indentured servant who is paying off her late parents death. Amari's family is killed and she is taken on a boat bringing her to South Carolina to be sold. Her and the other slaves brought over from Africa are put up for bidding. Amari is bought by a rich, rice farmer to give to his son as a birthday present. Once she makes it to his plantation she meets Polly, her master, Mr. Derby's indentured servant.
Polly had a good life. She lived with both her parents. They were poor, but they were happy. Tragedy struck when both her parents died from Small Pox. She was forced to work for Mr. Derby for 14 years to pay off her family's debt. She was taken to his rice plantation where she met his new slave. An African girl about her age, named Amari.
While at the rice plantation the two girls had life changing experiences. Amari was raped by Mr. Derby's son almost every night and Polly was reminded of her parents just about everyday. After a traumatic experience happens in the Derby household, Amari, Polly, and Tidbit, the cook's son, are to be sold to another owner. The three plan to run away however, while they still have the chance.
With the help of a doctor and other kind people along the way. The three workers, along with Tidbit's dog, Hushpuppy, embark on a dangerous journey to Fort Mose, a Spanish colony in Florida. While on the road they face many dangers, but are also helped by giving people. They are given a horse and wagon along the way, this helps them reach the colony.
Once there they reach Fort Mose they are free. Polly and Amari adopt Tidbit as their own and live a happier life. They meet many kind and caring people there who take them in and give them a house to love in. Amari also finds out shocking news, she is pregnant. At first she finds it overwhelming, but she eventually comes to be excited.
I really enjoyed the book Copper Sun. I think it was very detailed and exciting. My favorite part about this book was how each main character conquered their challenges. I found this book very fun and interesting to read. I liked how the book did not have pictures, but it was so descriptive that you could draw a picture in your head, just by reading the words. Copper Sun was a great book.
Though I did enjoy Copper Sun, I wish it hadn't ended that way. It was a good ending, but it left you at a cliff hanger. You would read the end of the book and just want to find out more. It made you want to know about the baby. When was it going to be born? By doing this however, the author lets you create your own ending.
Overall, Copper Sun became one of my favorite books. It was depressing, intriguing, and emotional. It really messed with your feelings, but that's what made it so good. The way it used tragedy made you think into the book. All in all, Copper Sun is a great read.
