Percival Derby was born into a rich family of rice farmers. They owned a big rice plantation in South Carolina. Percival Derby grew up around slaves. They worked all over their land, even inside their house. He always hated black people. He thought it was for their own good to be working all day as slaves.
Percival grew up fast. So fast, that he was soon seventeen. That’s when he met a girl. She was beautiful. She was all he ever wanted. They got married. You would have never seen anyone as happy as Percival. Him and his wife soon had a child together, his name was Clay. Percival thought he had everything, until his beloved wife died.
Everything was dreary and sad to Percival. He was depressed. That’s when he started to be extra cruel. He beat his slaves more often. Sometimes, he didn’t even have a reason to. Then, Isabel came along. He felt he was in love again. They were soon married.
Now, everything was going great for Percival. His wife was pregnant, he had plenty of rice workers, and Teenie was still cooking him delicious food. Finally, his wife gave birth. He thought this was going to be a great day, until he found out the shocking news. The baby was black.
Percival Derby was horrified. He shot the African American father, Noah, and the baby too. He decided he was going to sell his newest slave Amari, his indentured servant Polly, and Teenie’s son Tidbit. Little did he know that would be a big mistake.
The three workers ran away before he could sell them. Percival was mad, but he was glad to get rid of them. However, he sent out three slave hunters to look for them. They never found them. This made Percival Derby upset. His rice production hadn't been going very well and he was hoping to make money off the three workers. He decided to sell a few rice farmers, he didn't really need them anyways.
Percival had other problems to deal with. His wife was not talking to him. Isabel spent every day locked up in her room, sobbing. She refused to eat, but it wasn't like Teenie was cooking either. Teenie was furious with Mr. Derby for separating her from her son. He had tried to punish her, but it made no difference. She did not want to cook.
Things only got worse. His slaves refused to work some days. Percival's plantation was falling apart. His wife was getting weaker and weaker each day. The only thing that got better was Teenie. She began to cook again. They weren't very pleasing meals, but they were something. Percival put all his energy into Clay. Clay was the only one that hadn't broke down. Percival used his remaining money to send Clay to school, in hopes Clay could have a better life.
One stormy night Percival received a message. His wife had committed suicide. Percival Derby broke down. He asked Teenie to make him a fine meal, which would be his last. Teenie had poisoned the food she mad Percival. She had still been furious about what he did. Percival died that night.
